Calendar of seasonal fruits and vegetables

Seasonal vegetables are those that are at their optimum moment of consumption and, therefore, provide us with more benefits and have a much more intense and natural flavor.

Its smell, taste and texture are excellent at that moment.

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) creates a calendar of seasonal fruits and vegetables in Spain each year. In Tapería Orgánica, we wanted to summarize this calendar in this article and answer some of the most frequent questions.

The vegetables that reach their optimum moment in spring are the artichokes, Swiss chard, spinach and leeks. It is also the season for lettuce, radishes, onions and carrots. Fruits with great availability in spring are strawberries, plums, apricots, cherries and blueberries.

The season of heat and sun is the time of great variety of refreshing fruits such as pears, melon, watermelon, raspberry and blackberry. In summer, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, squash, zucchini and beets are harvested.

Autumn is the food season such as figs, Golden apples, pear blanquilla, quince, pomegranate, grape and persimmon. In September, the first crops of vegetables such as cauliflower, spinach, turnip, artichokes, wild asparagus and fennel also arrive.

At the end of autumn come the endives and the lettuces and in December the season of more winter vegetables like cabbage, celery and broccoli begins. Citrus fruits such as orange, tangerine, grapefruit and lemon are the best allies in this time to have defenses always alert and look radiant skin.

There are also fruits and vegetables that, depending on their reproductive cycle or the place where they are grown, can be found perfect all year round such as lemon, banana, avocado, mango, pineapple and kiwi.
